These steps will guide you through setting up your computer and physical environment for your Varjo headset.
Important: If you are using tracking technology other than SteamVR™, please refer to these instructions before beginning setup.
|1. Start Varjo Base
Varjo Base is needed to run the headset and contains the necessary settings and functionalities for it. Download it here.
When installed, Varjo Base will appear in the Windows Start menu and the notification area on your Windows taskbar.

|2. Connect the Varjo headset
Note: When connecting for the first time, Windows will recognize the headset as a new USB device and install the appropriate drivers.
A) Connecting with a PC
If your computer has both an integrated graphics card and a dedicated graphics card, make sure to use the ports on your dedicated graphics card.
B) Connecting with a laptop
VR-2 Pro and VR-2: Depending on the type of port you have, use either the full or Mini-size DisplayPort cable included in the box.
|3. Install headset configuration bundle (VR-2 Pro and VR-2 only)
For the best possible visual experience, please download and install the headset configuration bundle associated with your headset model. If you have not yet completed installation, a notification will appear in the status area of Varjo Base with instructions for downloading the software. Alternatively, navigate to the Support tab in Varjo Base and follow the instructions under Software updates. For offline installation, download the headset configuration bundle on another computer and copy the installation files locally to your computer.
|4. Set up the base stations
Set up the SteamVR™ base stations in the room following these step-by-step instructions. You can use either SteamVR™ 1.0 or 2.0 base stations.
Important: The tracking features in Varjo Base only apply to SteamVR™. If you are using an alternative tracking method, please review these instructions.
|5. Track your headset
Varjo Base shows the status of your base stations. Check that your headset is visible to your base stations and that tracking is working.
If the headset is not tracking, make sure that the headset is in direct line of sight with the base stations, and that the sensors on the front plate of the headset are not covered.
|6. Set up room
When using the Varjo headset for the first time in a new environment, you will need to perform a brief setup to configure the headset and base stations.
Perform this setup each time you move the headset and base stations to a new environment, or if you move the base stations or change their orientation in your current room.
|7. Optional: Pair your controller(s)
You can set your existing controllers to work with the Varjo headset. You can use any SteamVR™-compatible controller, such as the HTC Vive controller.
Note: If you have paired your controllers with another VR headset, they will need to be paired again with the Varjo headset.
|8. Optional: Enable hand tracking (VR-2 Pro only)
The VR-2 Pro features integrated Ultraleap® hand tracking and requires additional software to enable.
To use hand tracking in your apps, you will need to download Ultraleap SDK for Varjo VR-2 Pro.
For more information on using hand tracking, refer to the developer documentation.
|9. Optional: Connect your headphones
If your VR experiences include sounds or voice input, you can plug your headphones into the headset. Headphones with a 3.5mm audio jack are compatible with the Varjo headset.
Remember to check that you have selected the correct sound output and input source from the settings on your Windows computer.
This completes the setup for your headset. What’s next?
Test your headset with Varjo Showcases
The quickest way to test your headset is to download Varjo Showcases, a set of VR experiences designed to demonstrate the graphical capabilities of the Varjo headset.
Save a showcase app on your computer and open the app to view it. The application opens directly in your headset.
Enjoy your headset!
Your Varjo headset should now be up and running.
