Setting up the SteamVR™ base stations

Here is a step-by-step guide for setting up the base stations.

1. Prepare the room where you are going to use the headset.

Make sure to clear the room from any obstacles you might hit when using the headset.

Please be aware that reflective surfaces may distract tracking. If possible, cover all reflective surfaces.

2. Choose the positions for the base stations.

The recommended distances are:

  • Minimum 1.5 meters (5 ft) between each base station and the headset.
  • Maximum 5 meters (16 ft) between the base stations.

  • Four base stations 2.0 are recommended if you plan to walk and move around in the room.
  • Two base stations 2.0 or 1.0 can be used for sitting and stationary use.
3. Adjust the height and angle of the base stations.

  • Place the base stations high up in the room at minimum 2 meters (6.5 ft) and angled down 30–45 degrees.
  • Make sure the base stations are in direct line of sight with each other and the headset, also when you move around.
  • Use the wall-mounting kit (included in the box) or a tripod of your choosing (not included). If you need additional instructions, check the manufacturer’s detailed guide (PDF) how to use the mounting kit.
4. Plug in the base stations.

The box includes two different power plugs; choose the suitable power plug according to your region. Use a standard power adapter if needed.

Remove the protective film from the base station lenses.

5. Set the channels for your base stations.

Follow the instructions below depending on the version you have.

A. Setting channels for Base stations 1.0

Tip: You will recognize this generation from the rectangular shape of the device.

  1. Locate the Mode button at the back of the device.
  2. Set the channels according to how many base stations you are using:

    1 base station = a
    2 base stations = b + c

B. Setting channels for Base stations 2.0

Tip: You will recognize this generation from the rounded front panel.

  1. Use a paper clip or similar to operate the Mode button at the back of the device.
  2. Use Varjo Base to check the current channel for each base station.
  3. Set each base station to a different channel. One button press increments the channel by one.

You can choose any sequence of consecutive channels between 1 and 16, for example (1, 2, 3, 4) or (7, 8, 9, 10).
