Varjo’s Mixed Reality Device Wins an Innovation Award from Military Training & Simulation Magazine
Varjo Wins “Outstanding Innovative Product” in Military Simulation & Training 2020 Awards
August 11th, 2020 – Helsinki, Finland – Varjo has won the “Outstanding Innovative Product” award selected by the readers of Military Training & Simulation magazine.
This award recognises innovative products that provide enhanced value to the military clients’ education, training and human performance domains. The category includes products such as instructional media, training devices or components, content development tools, analysis and evaluation tools and methods, and performance support.
“Varjo XR-1 Developer Edition is an industrial-grade, premium quality mixed reality device with photorealistic visual fidelity, ultra-low latency and integrated eye tracking. With the visual fidelity in Varjo XR-1, trainees can for the first time read fine text on displays and interact with the smallest buttons, switches and gauges as well as see objects at realistic visibility ranges inside immersive training environments such as pilot cockpits,” described the 2020 Industry Awards committee.
Varjo used with real-time chroma keying also enables multi-user training scenarios where it is possible to interact with co-pilots or other colleagues. The emergence of Varjo’s photorealistic mixed reality device can bring major cost savings and portability, and with built-in eye tracking promises more effective training, design and assessment.

Three of Varjo’s I/ITSEC 2019 event partners who featured a Varjo HMD in their booth are also recipients of MS&T’s recognition for their role in blazing the training trail.
- CAE won two of the product categories for their work with the Australian Air Force (“Outstanding Service and Support Program”) and the Canadian NFTC program (“Outstanding Training System Integration Project”).
- Bohemia Interactive Simulations’ Virtual Reality in Land Training (VRLT) Pilot Study won the award for “Outstanding VR/AR/MR Application”.
- Australian-based Ryan Aerospace was awarded MS&T’s “Small Business of the Year” for their rapid innovation and growth in the military training space by manufacturing modular and reconfigurable VR-based helicopter training systems.
