Get to Know the New VR/XR Software Features in Varjo Base 4.4

The latest version of Varjo Base marks a major leap forward for the passthrough experience with Varjo XR-4 Series headsets.

The high resolution focus area is now bigger and faster than ever before, facilitating an industry leading ability to see real world details and read text.

Varjo Base 4.4. New breakthroughs for passthrough.

Varjo Base version 4.4 is a major software update that elevates the video passthrough experience of the XR-4 Series headsets to an entirely new level.

By significantly enhancing how the high-resolution video feed of the outside world is displayed in the headset, users are now especially well-equipped for use cases where reading text and seeing fine details in the real world is essential.

Additional improvements enhance the overall user experience, including major optimizations that reduce the headset’s load on connected PC hardware, improved inside-out tracking accuracy, stability, and more.

Key highlights of the update include:

  • The ultra high resolution focus area has more than doubled in size (2.4x) at 90 Hz refresh rate.
  • The focus area is now better blended into the expansive peripheral view.
  • The focus area now reacts to your eye movements at up 40 ms faster.
  • Color accuracy and low light performance have significantly improved.
  • GPU load has decreased by up to 50% in some scenarios, and CPU load by up to 80%.

  • Inside-out tracking has accuracy improvements of up to 20%.

  • General bug fixes and stability improvements

For the complete list of new features, improvements, and known issues, please refer to the release notes.

Bring more reality into focus

The focus area, a dynamic rectangular zone where passthrough pixels are concentrated, has grown significantly—more than doubling in size (2.4x at 90Hz).

With a much larger portion of the field of view now in focus at up to 51 PPD clarity, the reading experience while wearing the headset is comparable to that of the naked eye.

XR training scenarios that involve interacting with real-world elements, such as physical dials and data displayed on the cockpit of a flight simulator, will see substantial improvements with Varjo Base 4.4.

Passthrough perfected for pilots

Using eye-tracking technology, the headset recognizes where the user is looking and moves the focus area to align with their gaze in real-time.

With the latest update, the speed at which this area moves (now up to 40 ms faster) and how smoothly it blends into the surrounding view have been improved to the point where the process becomes nearly imperceptible.

With a host of additional image enhancements, from improved color accuracy to better low-light performance, the XR-4 series headsets now stand apart in their ability to facilitate high-precision XR training and simulation experiences.

Performance gains without the heavy lifting

Typically, faster, sharper, and smoother experiences increase demands on PC hardware rendering the virtual content. However, the passthrough enhancements in Varjo Base 4.4, along with improvements to inside-out tracking, come with no additional performance cost.

General optimizations have resulted in significant reductions in both CPU and GPU load when using the XR-4 Series, enabling users to push the boundaries of high-resolution graphics and maintain training-critical high frame rates without sacrificing performance.
