Get to Know the New VR/XR Software Features in Varjo Base 4.2
The latest release of Varjo Base greatly enhances the user experience of Varjo XR-4 Series headsets by making a major leap forwards in video passthrough performance, improving the accuracy of the inside-out tracking, and much more.
Varjo Base 4.2 is also recommended for Varjo XR-3, VR-3, and Aero users.
What’s new in Varjo Base 4.2?
Varjo Base is the industry’s most versatile, powerful, and intuitive companion software for advanced VR and XR usage. The latest update 4.2 is now available to download via the Account Portal.
Varjo Base version 4.2 marks a major step forward in software maturity for the new XR-4 Series headsets, allowing the breakthrough XR hardware advancements to shine in immersive experiences.
XR-4 Series users can now expect,
- Major improvements to mixed reality video passthrough quality and controls.
- More accurate color representation and automatic white balance
- Improved and more granular ISO, exposure, and focus distance settings
- Better chroma key performance, especially in varied lighting conditions
- Faster and more accurate autofocus in the XR-4 Focal Edition
- Varjo Inside-out tracking accuracy has been enhanced, and made more efficient with a reduction in CPU usage.
- Varjo Controller tracking is improved.
- Eye tracking processing speed is now even faster and latency has been reduced in eye-tracked foveation.
- LiDAR sensors now perform better with increased stability.
- Faster device startup times
Varjo XR-3, VR-3 and Aero users are now also recommended to update to Varjo Base 4.2.

Video passthrough, refined
Headlining this release is an extensive upgrade to the passthrough experience provided by the XR-4 Series.
The overall image quality has been massively improved with finer tuned sharpness, improved color balance, reduced noise, full exposure controls, and automatic white balance.
Major improvements also lie in the chroma key masking performance and with significant reductions in latency in both eye-tracked foveation and the autofocus feature of the XR-4 Focal Edition.
Please note that we will continue to make further improvements on passthrough image quality and latency through our future software updates.
Sharper tracking
4.2 further optimizes inside-out tracking for the XR-4 Series, focusing on providing a more accurate experience with reduced jitter especially in common office or studio-style environments.
Occurrences of heavy CPU loads whilst using inside-out tracking have been addressed, especially with the use of Varjo Controllers.
With the accompanying tweak tool, 4.2 users will be able to manually test which inside-out cameras are used to better suit different environments (top, bottom, or experimental use of both top and bottom).
Further improvements to the tracking experience, as well as a marked improvement to the mixed reality alignment, are expected in forthcoming updates.

Enriched experience
The speed of the integrated eye tracking on all XR-4 Series headsets has been improved for a better foveation experience with virtual content, even over long duration sessions.
The first time use and room setup process has been enhanced and streamlined, featuring intuitive troubleshooting, automatic floor detection, room recognition, and the ability to reset the setup without resetting the headset.
