Varjo Base 4.12 Release Notes

The latest Varjo Base release brings a new wave of tools and refinements for professionals working across training, simulation, design, and research.

From command-line automation to predictive eye tracking, hand occlusion, and better tracking in low-light, Varjo Base 4.12 is designed to give you more control, more immersion, and more performance—all without complicating your workflow.

Key highlights of the update include:

  • Varjo Command-Line Interface (Beta) – Control and configure Varjo Base through scriptable commands for streamlined automation.

  • Hand Occlusion in Mixed Reality – See your real hands in video passthrough, even in applications that haven’t implemented occlusion themselves.

  • More accurate inside-out tracking – Better tracking accuracy in dark environments, with faster recovery after signal loss – especially designed for cockpit use cases.

  • Predictive foveation and improved video passthrough – Eye-tracking powered enhancements improve both the VR and passthrough experience.

  • General bug fixes and stability improvements

Together, these updates make Varjo Base more customizable, more adaptable, and more efficient, especially in large-scale or collaborative environments, enabling smooth workflows where a user can start a session instantly from the point of putting on a headset.

Automate and customize with the Varjo Command-Line Interface (Beta)

A powerful new feature for system integrators and enterprise users, the Varjo Command-Line Interface (CLI) allows you to control and configure Varjo Base without launching the UI.

Use it to:
• Calibrate eye tracking with an external button or cockpit input
• Switch settings based on the type of session or application
• Automate setup and system readiness before training begins

This is the first step in unlocking deeper system-level automation, helping reduce manual setup time and boosting operational efficiency in large deployments.

See your real hands with Hand Occlusion in XR

Previously, showing your real hands inside mixed reality required application-level support or relied on depth occlusion, which rendered everything within range.

Now with Hand Occlusion, Varjo Base isolates just your hands, even if your app doesn’t natively support occlusion. This means:
• Hands appear realistically integrated into your XR environment
• Perfect for gesture-based interaction, training, and natural immersion

Whether you’re pointing, manipulating virtual controls, or simply observing hand presence, this upgrade creates a cleaner, more focused MR experience.

Smarter, more robust inside-out tracking

Inside-out tracking has taken another leap forward in 4.12:
• Improved positional tracking accuracy by ~10-20 %.
• Improved tracking accuracy in dark environments
• More accurate room recognition and tracking loss recovery once the headset is returned to a trackable area.

These upgrades translate into steadier tracking, smoother movement, and fewer interruptions, especially in high-pressure or dynamically lit environments.

Predictive foveation and seamless visual quality

4.12 introduces Predictive Foveation, a powerful enhancement that anticipates your eye movements, reducing latency in both foveated rendering and passthrough video by 15–25 milliseconds.

In practice, this means:
• Sharper focus where you’re looking—right when you need it
• More responsive foveation in fast-paced interactions
• Improved passthrough color consistency, particularly in darker lighting

Combined, these upgrades ensure that your visuals feel more fluid and natural, whether you’re in a VR cockpit or exploring an MR training environment.

At Varjo, we’re committed to evolving Varjo Base based on feedback from professionals like you. With each release, we aim to increase the value of your headset by refining performance, unlocking new tools, and future-proofing your workflows.

As always, we encourage you to test the new features—especially the Varjo Command-Line Interface and Hand Occlusion—and share your insights with us. Your feedback helps shape what comes next.
