Get to Know the New VR/XR Software Features in Varjo Base 4.7
The latest Varjo Base update introduces powerful upgrades to improve video pass-through quality, mixed reality alignment, eye tracking, and inside-out tracking.
With automatic autofocus calibration, enhanced foveation consistency, and better tracking recovery, Varjo Base 4.7 delivers a smoother and more natural experience for all XR-4 users.
Varjo Base 4.7. More seamless. More precise.
The latest version of Varjo Base brings significant enhancements across multiple areas, from improved mixed reality alignment to better image quality and tracking performance. Users of the XR-4 Focal Edition will now benefit from automatic autofocus calibration, eliminating the need for manual calibration.
Additionally, improved focus area blending makes passthrough visuals more natural, while inside-out tracking has been optimized for faster recovery in situations where tracking is temporarily lost.
Key highlights of the update include:
-
Automatic autofocus calibration – Manual calibrations are no longer required for the XR-4 Focal Edition. The system now automatically adjusts focus drift in the VST cameras for consistent performance.
-
Improved mixed reality alignment – Synchronization between real and virtual elements has been enhanced. Now, when turning your head, misalignment and drift of virtual objects is reduced.
-
Better foveation blending – Improved passthrough image tunings reduces any halo effects in the peripheral vision, making passthrough video feel more seamless and realistic.
-
Faster inside-out tracking recovery – Tracking now recovers more effectively when lost, with IoT recognizing familiar scenes more quickly.
-
Reduced eye-tracking jitter – Eye tracking is now more stable for eyeglass wearers, making gaze-based interactions more precise.
-
New rendering options – Updated Resolution Quality settings in Varjo Base now better support different applications, offering improved flexibility.
-
Additional improvements and fixes – Including OpenXR layer management, controller pairing fixes, and enhanced USB connection troubleshooting.
- General bug fixes and stability improvements

No more manual autofocus calibration
The Varjo XR-4 Focal Edition introduces a major quality-of-life upgrade: automatic autofocus calibration. This means users no longer need to manually adjust the focus drift of the video passthrough cameras.
The system now continuously compensates for any autofocus shifts, ensuring a stable and clear passthrough experience without interruption. Whether working in training, simulation, or design review workflows, this update delivers more reliability and ease of use for professional applications.
Improved mixed reality alignment during head movement
For mixed reality applications, precise alignment between real-world and virtual elements is critical—especially when turning your head. In Varjo Base 4.7, synchronization between VR content and passthrough video has been improved to reduce alignment drift during fast head movements.
By introducing better temporal synchronization, virtual objects remain more accurately anchored to the real-world scene, providing a smoother, more immersive experience for users across engineering, design visualization, and training applications.

More natural video passthrough with improved foveation blending
Users will now experience a more seamless transition between the foveated focus area and peripheral vision. Previous versions sometimes exhibited minor halo effects—a visible contrast between sharp and peripheral regions.
Varjo Base 4.7 addresses this with new image quality tuning that blends these areas more naturally. The result? A more immersive, comfortable visual experience for mixed reality applications.
At Varjo, we continuously improve our software based on customer feedback. Varjo Base updates are released regularly, with major updates scheduled every two months.
