Varjo Achieves Full Compliance with OpenXR 1.0 Standard to Merge Virtual and Physical Worlds Like Never Before

Developers can now easily harness the power of Varjo’s fully compatible headsets featuring the world’s most advanced human-eye resolution, depth understanding, eye tracking and foveated rendering

Helsinki, Finland – April 13th, 2021Varjo, the leader in professional-grade VR/XR devices, is now fully compatible with the OpenXR 1.0 specification. OpenXR is an open, royalty-free standard that provides an API for virtual reality and augmented reality content. Developed by the non-profit consortium Khronos Group, OpenXR allows developers to make sure their content is compatible across multiple hardware platforms and devices.

“We are proud to extend the OpenXR standard to our professional customers across training and simulation, industrial design, medical, research, and academia, to accelerate the merging of virtual and physical worlds,” said Urho Konttori, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Varjo. “Offering a unified reality for developers is an important step on Varjo’s journey in bringing immersive technology to every workplace – and eventually revolutionizing computing for all.”

Varjo’s entire portfolio of virtual and mixed reality headsets (current and previous generations) are now fully compatible with the OpenXR 1.0 standard. As a result, developers can more easily take advantage of Varjo’s unique VR/XR capabilities while conforming to industry standards and ensuring true cross-platform experiences. The supported Varjo features include human-eye resolution, eye tracking, foveated rendering, as well as depth understanding in the new Varjo XR-3. With these features, developers can unlock some of the world’s most advanced virtual, augmented and mixed reality experiences.

“Varjo has been a valuable contributor to OpenXR since 2019. Varjo’s VR and XR headsets were some of the first to publicly demonstrate support for OpenXR. Today, we are extremely happy to add Varjo and their unique approach to delivering higher visual fidelity in virtual and mixed reality experiences to the growing list of companies fully supporting the OpenXR 1.0 specification,” said Brent Insko, Lead XR Architect at Intel and OpenXR Working Group Chair.

In addition to OpenXR 1.0, all Varjo headsets are also fully compatible with Unity, Unreal Engine and hundreds of other industrial 3D software tools. A full list of supported software and 3D platforms can be found here.
