In 2021, the FAA officially qualified a virtual reality-based training solution for aviation training for the first time. Developed and built by Loft Dynamics, the simulator uses Varjo’s high-resolution virtual reality headsets to simulate a realistic training experience.

VR/XR based FSTDs

FAA & EASA certified flight training

As virtual and mixed reality technology continues to mature, its value in certified flight training environments is becoming increasingly clear. With the first virtual and mixed reality–based flight simulators now certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), momentum is building as more training organizations explore how VR/XR can be incorporated into their certified training curricula.

The benefits are well established, including improved cost efficiency, a smaller physical footprint, and greater scalability compared to traditional simulator infrastructure. Within this landscape, the Varjo XR-4 Series supports certified VR/XR flight training through industry-leading visual fidelity, broad software compatibility, and integrated eye tracking designed for professional simulation use.

Explore the EASA- and FAA-certified flight training devices below and see how Varjo fits into today’s certified virtual and mixed reality flight simulation environments.
