Red Bull Brings the Thrill of Extreme Watersports to Museumgoers with Varjo’s Virtual Reality & Mixed Reality
Red Bull has opened up an immersive museum exhibition in Lucerne, Switzerland, utilizing Varjo’s world-leading XR technology.
Cliff diving is an extreme sport that offers a unique thrill to those who dare to take the plunge. Standing at the edge of a towering cliff with crystal-clear water waiting below, the rush of adrenaline coursing through the body is unparalleled. As the diver jumps, they experience the joy of freefall, followed by a feeling of triumph and accomplishment as they emerge from the water.
The rush of cliff diving might be unparalleled, but the sport is certainly not for the faint of heart, and locations where these daring jumps can be made aren’t readily available to everyone.
Now, Red Bull is making it easier for people to experience this unique rush in a more accessible environment, in the comfort of the Verkehrshaus (Swiss Museum of Transport) in Lucerne, Switzerland. Instead of jumping from a real cliff, museum visitors can dive into a realistic mixed reality watersports experience powered by the Varjo’s headset.
Red Bull Cliff Diving Experience
In a new special exhibition called Water – Breaking the Surface, visitors can find out first-hand what the extreme watersports of Red Bull athletes feels like. The highlight of the exhibition, which opened on March 20, 2023, is the Red Bull Cliff Diving experience, which transports visitors to the 27-meter-high cliff in Sisikon using the state-of-the-art mixed reality technology from Varjo.
The Red Bull project team chose Varjo due to its unparalleled visual fidelity, the ability to blend virtual and real worlds together in true-to-life human-eye resolution and extremely low latency, as well as Ultraleap hand tracking. No other device on the market is able to deliver such a breathtaking visual experience that realistically mimics the extreme sport.
Water – Breaking the Surface: A Multimedia Exhibition About Extreme Water Sports
Red Bull has developed the exhibition in co-operation with the Swiss Museum of Transport and Swiss and international multimedia experts and producers in order to make the breathtaking water sport experienceable up close. The exhibition will be open daily all year round and is accessible to museum visitors from 12 years of age.
