Setting up the system

This video gives a general overview of setting up your computer for use with Varjo headsets. More detailed information can be found below.

 

 

 

Computer hardware

To determine your computer’s compatibility with Varjo, simply download and run Varjo Base on your Windows computer. The software will guide you through a quick compatibility check.

Please note that Varjo headsets require a Windows 10 desktop computer or laptop.

* IMPORTANT: While the architecture (and naming) of the laptop and desktop GPUs are the same, the performance with mobile GPUs is significantly lower.  Also note that AMD graphics cards are not currently supported by Varjo headsets.

** Important: take note of the requirements regarding connectivity ports – use of adapters is not recommended due to known compatibility issues.

Software requirements

Thunderbolt™ driver Required for XR-1 Developer Edition only

Install the Thunderbolt™ software and driver downloaded from the motherboard manufacturer’s website. Perform the installation regardless of whether the Thunderbolt™ software is pre-installed.

  1. Download the Steam desktop application
  2. Create a Steam account
  3. Download SteamVR

* Please note: SteamVR software is required regardless of the tracking technology you will ultimately use.

 

 

Required accessories

There are a few items that are not provided with Varjo headsets. These will need to be purchased separately:

SteamVR™ base stations 1.0 or 2.0 * 4 x SteamVR™ 2.0 base stations

  • Four base stations are recommended when using VR apps that require moving in the room.
  • You can purchase these from the Varjo webstore.
2 x SteamVR™ 2.0 or 1.0 base stations

  • A minimum of two base stations is required for tracking the headset in stationary use or while sitti­­­­­ng.
  • Please note: You can use either the SteamVR™ 1.0 or 2.0 base stations, but the base stations you plan to use must be compatible with each other. You can find compatibility specifications here.
SteamVR™-compatible controllers * Optional

Controllers are used for interacting with virtual objects. Varjo headsets can be used without controllers, but your VR applications might have specific interactions that require using a controller.

You can use either SteamVR™ 1.0 or 2.0 controllers, however, the base stations and controllers you plan to use must be compatible with each other.

Headphones (optional) Optional

Headphones with a 3.5mm audio jack are compatible with Varjo headsets.

* Note: Third-party tracking technologies are compatible with Varjo headsets. Please review these instructions for detailed information.

 

 

Information about SteamVR™-compatibility

Varjo headsets use the SteamVR™ Tracking technology for the headset and controllers. The headset can be used with both SteamVR™ 2.0 and 1.0 base stations. However, please be aware that the base stations and accessories need to be compatible with each other.

From Varjo Base 2.0 onward, Varjo supports OpenVR and OpenXR. Additionally, SteamVR applications are now compatible with Varjo.
